How do free ringtone downloads work on your phone?

Like if you download a free ringtone off the internet how does it work. Do you have to put it into your phone and they send it to you like a text or what? sorry I didn't post sooner. Its a tracfone

As far as i know with tracfone you can not get ringtones unless you get them from tracfone because they have it blocked so you can't download sounds from a text. a verizon pre pay works out to be a lot cheaper to use if you text alot to other verizon phones but if you call alot then you might want to stick with tracfone unless your rate per min is more then 25 cents because verizon has a better network
